Bookcover for Franz Kafkas novella, The Metamorphosis (1st pub. 1915).
"The Metamorphosis" (Die Verwandlung, also sometimes termed "The Transformation") tells a tale of a young man Gregor Samsa, waking to find himself transformed into a monstrous vermin, becomes a burden to his family, and eventually dies of starvation. It is never explained in the story why Samsa transforms, nor did Kafka ever give an explanation.
